March 22 Meet Planning
North Georgia Youth League Meet #3 in Jefferson, GA
Text or Email Mr. Schmiege with your meet entry requests by Noon on Wednesday, March 19th.
March 12th UPDATE:
Practice Schedule:
Practice is on Mondays and Wednesdays for the rest of the season.
Kids are encouraged to run together after school or over the weekends to extend their training beyond the two days that we practice as a team.
MEET Results:
Meet results from March 8th in Athens are in this PDF.
UPCOMING MEETS:
March 22 - Jefferson, GA
March 29 - Either Lilburn, GA or Mt. Airy, GA
(I’m hoping for Lilburn, but don’t yet know if we’ll be able to get in to that one.)
April 5 - Sugar Hill, GA
April 12 - Jefferson, GA
(As of March 12, this is the last track meet I’m sure we will attend.)
There are meets on April 19 and April 26 that look to have some pretty high level competition. Hopefully at that point in the season, we’ll be up for that challenge. I’m hopeful that we can have some athletes ready to run April 19, since that one works better for my schedule.
March 2nd UPDATE:
FIRST MEET:
The first meet is on Saturday, March 8th. Check your email for more information. We are using the same style of uniforms as we did for Cross Country in the fall, however new pieces have not arrived yet. If your child doesn’t have a uniform that fits, they can wear athletic shorts and a Sola Fide tee.
Signup for this meet is due by noon on March 4th. Please use the link below to understand the schedule and the events available to your child.
SCHEDULE CHANGE:
We will have practice on Thursday, March 6th, and that will be our last Thursday practice for the year. We will be moving our practices to a Monday and Wednesday schedule starting on March 10th and 12th.
Throwing Coach:
Arshella (Reian’s mom) has volunteered to help kids learn how to throw a shot put and a discus! I’m going to encourage all kids to try and learn a little about these two disciplines.
Keep Moving:
Right now, we are doing a lot of challenging speed work in practice. We have a three-pronged goal of improving speed/power, increasing our VO2 Max, and increasing our Lactate Threshold. Speed work alone is not enough to really boost all three of these elements of running. If students really want to level up, they should consider some self-guided workouts on their off days. A “recovery run” of between 10 and 20 minutes at an easy pace would be appropriate for most of our students.
If 5th-9th graders want to do this recovery run with friends on campus after school, send me a text and I’ll almost certainly be ok with it!
INTRO:
The Track and Field team is open to students in grades 2-9. If a Kindergarten or First grade student wants to join in the running, the parents of that student should contact Mr. Schmiege before signing that student up for the club. Generally, if a younger student comes to practice, they need to have a parent join them for the first few practices.
Track and Field practices will be on Monday and Wednesday from 3:50 to 4:55.
We plan to run in a few meets. Some have a wide age range. Other meets are limited to older students.
